You were a man of few words but you showed your love by actions. Larry has told me many stories of the things you did for him while he was growing up. I am glad he had a parent like you he could count on. I feel I am married to one of the best guys in the world and I know you had alot to do with that. Thank you for being a good Father to my husband and a sweet Father in law to me. You will be greatly missed.

    Poppie,
I remember finding out as an elementary student that your name wasn’t actually Pa, but Robert. You were the absolute best poppie ever to live. I loved when you would rub my ears, and when you always got out of the bathroom when I needed in. Our trips to the grocery store were my favorite, and I will always be your best shopping buddy. You obviously had a wonderful impact on your daughter, because she is the best mom. I can see your humor in my mom, and I value that. I miss you and can’t wait to see you again, someday. You were such an amazing guy and I will never forget the impact you left upon my life.
I love you so much, and miss you terribly. With love,
    Catherine…(your best shopping buddy)

In memory of my loving Dad. You were the best father anyone could have. I love you so much! You were always there for us all. You gave us so much and I will greatly miss you. Now you have gone to be with the Lord, and the rest of the family that have gone on before us. We will all be together again and the circle will be unbroken, Until then I will grieve.

  16. Meredith Upchurch says

    September 15, 2008 at 1:00 AM

    Poppie,

You know me, I could write an entire novel here. It is hard for me to decide just exactly what to say. So, I will just say this:

I remember you would tell people, GÇ£That Meredith, sheGÇÖs the same no matter what.GÇ¥ I know it was a simple statement, but I took it as one of my greatest compliments. To me, it meant that you saw me as genuine and true to myself. It always made me feel good to hear about times you would tell someone that about me.

My love and respect for you is beyond words. You stuck with my Grandma through thick and thin, year after year. You helped make my Dad one of the most amazing and beautiful people I have ever met. You loved me, and the rest of your grandchildren with all of your heart. You were a peaceful, kind and genuine man.

These things I know. And for all of these things, and more, I am forever grateful.

I love you with all my heart, and will miss you immensely.

    -Your Doodle Bug, Meredith

You were a quiet person that I admired and loved.
I know that Jesus took you home and that I will see you again.

    Poppy,
I’m reminded in this time how important it is that we love the people in our lives each and every day. Things can change so fast. It is hard to imagine going to visit Grandma and you not being there anymore. Thank you for all the good memories. I read over the other entries and I see how you had a special bond with each of us. Whether it be a nickname, a place you took us for food, or the way you helped us when we needed it.
For me, I remember trips to White Castle, eating lots of ice cream, and you offering to help me every time I had any car troubles.
Thank you for giving me my dad. He is a loving and generous father.
    I miss you!
    Love your first grandbaby

    My Robert,

I miss you coming into our bedroom to wake me up and saying, “Are you ready for coffee?” I have to make myself get up in the morning now that you are not here.

Our dog, Harvey, and I miss you so much. The house is so lonesome and empty without you. You were the best thing that ever happened to me. I love you so much and I always will.

It broke my heart to see you like you were. God called you home so you could rest. Rest in peace my dear precious Robert.

    Love,

Josie (the nickname you gave me so many years ago)

    Your wife, Robbie

  26. Larry Upchurch says

    September 18, 2008 at 1:00 AM

GÇ£Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 7:15 GÇô 17)

The above verses are very comforting to me. I know that you are now with the Lord. I will miss you. Some day we will be together again. I look forward to that day. I love you very much.

We were shocked to see your recent rapid deterioration, and still find it hard to be without you. I enjoyed hearing your stories–especially those dealing with your experiences in the army. You will be remembered as a good man of quiet strength.

I will always cherish the time that I was able to spend with Poppy. My grandfather was a man that I truly loved and respected. Poppy had strong faith in the Lord. He lived a life of humble service to God and to his country. Poppy loved his family and friends; he was a man who was also sincerely loved by those family members and friends. As I attempt to make peace with the loss of my grandfather, I take great comfort in the words of the Apostle Paul. GÇ£For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that dayGÇöand not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.GÇ¥ 2 Timothy 4:6-8 (New International Version)
